Rejected Manuscripts from Accession 1

This series comprises poetry manuscripts which were submitted to Michael Schmidt, but which were not ultimately published by Carcanet. Although some of the book files in CPA/1/1/1 contain manuscript material which was not selected for inclusion in a published volume (as in Elizabeth Jennings's book files for example), the manuscripts listed here were rejected in their entirety. In some cases they were ultimately taken on by other publishers. Some of them are accompanied by covering letters, and in John Balaban's case by a bundle of associated correspondence.

The files are arranged alphabetically by author.

Although Carcanet did not publish the two collections by John Balaban listed here, they did publish a pamphlet of his entitled Vietnam poems in 1970. This pamphlet does not have a book file in the CPA/1/1/1 sequence, but the manuscript of it is included in Balaban's correspondence file at CPA/2/1/5.
