Scope and Content

File of 14 untitled manuscript poems which was stored with the other Morgan book files. The poems were written jointly by Edwin Morgan and Michael Schmidt, whose initials appear at the foot of each. Various references to these poems occur in Morgan's correspondence file at CPA/2/1/51, and in a letter of 1 July 1976 (CPA/2/1/51/135) Schmidt explained that their joint poems could not appear under the Carcanet imprint because the Carcanet articles prevented him as a director from publishing his work as an author (although not as an editor) with the company. Some of these poems subsequently appeared in a volume entitled Grafts, credited to Edwin Morgan and published by Mariscat in 1983. This file also includes a letter from Morgan to Schmidt dated 2 April 1971, in which he refers to the poems, as well as making reference to his translation of Mayakovsky, Wi the haill voice.
