Manuscript

Manuscript of the entire issue with the exception of the contents page. This is in the form of ribbon, carbon and photocopy typescripts submitted by contributors, some of them signed, others annotated and revised by their authors. The essays by Calvin Bedient and Donald Davie in particular are quite heavily revised and contain more than one version of text. Michael Schmidt has revised his own editorial by hand, and has also carried out minor editing on some of the other prose pieces. Parts of the manuscript have been marked up for printing by Val Warner; other parts contain only very minimal mark-up, probably indicating that the magazine was initially typeset in-house at Carcanet Press. A note appears on the first page of most of the contributions indicating how many pages in the published magazine the contribution would fill, and in the case of the prose pieces often a note of the word count. The Dick Davis manuscript includes more of Davis's poems than actually appeared in this issue of the magazine, although some of these are marked for potential inclusion in later issues. The additional poems are 'Sacred and Profane', 'St. Anthony Speaks', 'Cafe Singer - Tehran', 'The Place', 'Kaspar Hauser', 'Don Giovanni', 'A Perfect Ending' and 'Prayer'.

The contributions were not originally stored in the order in which they were published, and the manuscript had not been foliated. The order of the manuscript has now been reconstructed to reflect the published issue of the magazine, and running sheet numbers have been added by the archivist.
