Emma Catherine (1869-1960), daughter of Alfred Whiting Pollard, a corn factor. She a lecturer in biology at what was then Reading College, having gained an Oxford first in natural science; she gave up an academic career of great promise to care for her husband and children. She was the wife of William Macbride Childs (1869-1939) was an English academic administrator and historian, who was involved in the foundation of the University of Reading and who served briefly as its first vice-chancellor. She and her husband would have been at Reading at the same time as the Collingwoods.
