Hruschka's journey to Frankfurt has gone smoothly, and he has hopes of being able to extract his wife from the Russian Sector; he will travel to Dresden to bring her back. He has met a painter, who is also a priest of a Frankfurt anthroposophist community. Conditions in Germany are 'in some respects perfectly ghastly'.
