In around 1910, files replaced letter books as the main system of record keeping in the Registrar's Office. The files were identified by numbers, and soon a numerical filing system evolved. There was also an alphabetical system of filing. Some files were never included in either filing systems. More recently, other series of files have appeared, e.g. appointment files. Files created prior to 1957 have suffered much destruction and re-arrangement, consequently the present list does not represent the original order. If there are a number of files on a topic, these have been listed under a subject heading. The remainder have been listed in chronological order. Old references have been included in the lists.
