Scope and Content

Imogen Holst's files on the works of Gustav Holst. These files contain Imogen’s working materials for ‘A Thematic Catalogue of Gustav Holst’s Music’ as well as a variety of other items added after publication in 1974. .

There is 1 file per work labelled H1 to H192 and Appendices I to III, 25 corresponding with the order or works in the 'Thematic Catalogue'.

File contents vary but may include;

a. Imogen Holst's papers concerning 'A Thematic Catologue of Gustav Holst's music'; this is material amassed during the preparation of the catalogue such as manuscripts for music examples, Imogen Holst's notes, programmes, correspondence, copies and transcripts of letters from Gustav Holst, etc. Each file includes an envelope containing a music example (incipit) of the first line of work as printed in the Thematic Catalogue. The envelope bears the word 'Facsimile' where one exists.

b. correspondence pre and post 1984 concerning the works; these are enquiries regarding performances, recordings, scores and parts, publications, copyright, translations and other matters. The pre 1984 correspondence is with Imogen Holst whilst the post 1984 correspondence is with a representative of G and I Holst Ltd or The Holst Foundation.

c. items concerning the works such as programmes, articles, press cuttings about the works, recordings and performances, Imogen Holst's programme notes, song texts etc.

Some files may contain T or JV numbers - ignore these as they were used in the preparation of the Thematic Catalogue and only the H numbers now apply.
