NPG - Minutes of Board of Patrons Meetings

Scope and Content

The Board of Patrons was made up of about 16 individuals. Meetings were attended by the following members of staff: the Director; Head of Communications & Development; Chief Curator; and Trust Fundraising Manager. They were also attended by Trustees and invited members. Invited members included existing members of the Patrons scheme and other individuals who had a close relationship to the Gallery.

Between 2000 and 2002 the Board of Patrons met four times a year.

Papers taken to meetings routinely included a report from the Head of Development; lists of Patron scheme members; lists of new approaches and renewals.

Administrative / Biographical History

The Board of Patrons first met on 3 October 1996. It was set up in order to raise matching funds of £4m (following a Heritage Lottery Fund commitment of £11.9m) for the Gallery's new wing (the Ondaatje Wing). It was chaired by Lord Carrington and Mrs Drue Heinz. By 1997, these funds had been raised and therefore the Board had no reason to meet again after this date.

The Board of Patrons was reformed in November 2000. The aim at this time, as recorded at the first meeting in November 2000, was to help increase the number of individual Gallery supporters - in particular, membership of the Patrons scheme which had been established in 1999. The Board of Patrons were active in introducing their contacts to the Gallery.

In early 2002 it was decided that the Board of Patrons and Development Board should merge to create one Development Board. For this reason, there are no records for the Board of Patrons after this date.
