Scope and Content

8 autograph letters signed by Helen Taylor (1831-1907) step-daughter of John Stuart Mill, all from 1866 and involving the petition of women to Parliament for the right to vote.

The letters have been discussed and partly quoted in my 'Helen Taylor, Suffragist,' in Manuscripts, Vol. XXX, No.2 (Spring 1978), pp.98-107. All are addressed to Barbara Leigh Smith Bodichon (1827-1891), who was the prime mover of the petition, but who needed feminine support and also the support of a member of Parliament, in which Mill then sat.
