Scope and Content

Photocopy of fragment of letter in which he thanks her for her letter of 30 Nov 'I see much force in some of the arguments there urged'.

No Date: Impossible to date year but month would be early Dec. The year is difficult to fix but it could not have been the end of 1882 as the Duke addresses her as Mrs Josephine E Butler, Liverpool and she and the family moved to Winchester just at that time. Some time in the 1870s would be the nearest guess.

Administrative / Biographical History

The Duke and Josephine corresponded on social subjects. He was liberal in outlook and a supporter of Gladstone and as is obvious from this fragment sympathetic to some of her views. Biog: Campbell, George Douglas, 8th Duke of Argyll (1823-1900)
