Josephine Butler to Rev George Butler

Written from Paris. Hopes to cross over to London not later than Thursday in the next week. She will have to stay in London long enough to report her foreign work to the Society. Thinks her tour will be a marked epoch in the history of the movement. Switzerland has responded nobly; there is now a Swiss Association; her last meeting at Lausanne was excellent. M. Humbert is joining her in Paris to help her.

This was JB's elder sister Mrs Frances Smyttan known in the family as Aunt Fanny. She was then living at Bickley, Kent

Catty = Stanley, JB's second son the family pet name for him

'Catty prays me so to come home via him, that may be I may, and I would see Arthur and Emily which I should much like to do'

Stanley was still at Oxford. Arthur was a younger brother of the Rev George Butler whom the Butlers had got to know well when they lived in Oxford 1852-1857. After his school master period, Arthur returned to Oxford in 1875 as dean and tutor of Oriel. He did not marry till Apr 1877. Emily was an unmarried sister who presumably kept house for him till his marriage. The 3 unmarried Butler girls, Emily, Gertrude and Ellen, had lived with their mother, Mrs Sarah Maria Butler, till her death in 1872

'I see Montagu has been made chaplain to the Queen'

This was Henry Montagu Butler, younger brother of the Rev George. In 1875 he was Head Master of Harrow (1859-1885). In 1886 he became Master of Trinity College Cambridge
