Emily and her mother before her were great friends of JB; they helped in the work and also helped JB privately in times of stress and illness

In an appreciation in the Times of 6 Mar 1936, Sir Michael Sadler said of her work: 'Emily had artistic talent, at times touched by genius'

Mrs Summer was a warm friend of JB and correspondence was maintained from 1886 till JB's death (see Index). She was the wife of the Bishop of Guildford (who acted as suffragan Bishop of Winchester). In 1887 she founded the Mothers' Union
