'The paragraph in Thursday's 'Daily Chronicle' about the Contagious Diseases Acts'

After reading the 'Daily Chronicle' Josephine Butler does not think it necessary to urge on the Committee the 'need of carefully nursing that Editor [WH Massingham] who is becoming a power'.

Gives directions for distribution of typed copies of a letter done by Emmie Thomas. Finding the difficulties of their Cause on the Continent very great and quotes the words of Luther when faced with a similar situation: we cannot do it so 'He must do it himself'.

'It is hard to get away'

The Federation Congress at Brussels was 15-17 Jul 1897 (See letter of 2 Mar 1897 Josephine Butler to Stanley in which she tells him of her having just spent a useful day in Brussels in preparation for the Conference to come).

The 'Daily Chronicle' was a morning paper run on independent Liberal lines and since 1877 had taken a leading part in many public movements. WH Massingham (b 1860) was editor from 1895-1899.
