Scope and Content
Administrative / Biographical History
After a brilliant career at Oxford, Smith bade farewell to his University to take up a professorship of history at the newly founded Cornell University (Ithica) in 1868. But he remained active in journalism contributing literary and political essays to periodicals of Canada, USA and England. With regard to Ireland he strenuously opposed Gladstone's Home Rule policy of 1886, and always remained faithful to Unionism. (Taken from Concise DNB 1900-50). Suggested date 1893 when he published 'Essays on questions of the day'
