Scope and Content

Written from Winchester (dictated). Difficult to fix on a date for the annual Meeting of the LNA as Mr Stuart strongly advises that they should not fix a date before he has a chance of bringing up in Parliament the question of repeal in the Colonies; so probably Mar would be the earliest. Also she could not leave her husband till then [George had been very ill all through 1886] and she herself was not fit to take part in public meetings. Suggests that a portion of the money subscribed by the LNA to the British Branch of the Federation should be used as a grant to M. or Mme Humbert. Thanks them warmly for the white shawl that they had sent her; it was kept at home while she was abroad and only found recently. She also thanks her friends and the Bristol ladies for the gift of money so kindly raised. Glad to tell them that their son Charles has now recovered [see letters of 5 May 1885 and 20 Jul 1886 giving an account of his experiences in Egypt]. During his 4 or 5 months in Switzerland with them in 1886 he looked after his father lovingly and with great ability.
