19 Mar 1886 'I was very glad to receive your clear and satisfactory account of the committee meeting last Friday ... and I am much obliged to your for releasing me from the secretaryship of your accepting it yourself.' This refers to the building of a church at Grindelwald for the yearly increasing number of visitors who went there. (See note for letter of 27 Feb 1885 from JB to Stanley). (Also Recollections of George Butler by his wife p.399). The church was opened on Whit Sunday but by that time the Canon was stricken with rheumatic fever and unable to travel anywhere. His place was taken by the Bishop of Ripon. The Boss's were grieved that 'their own Canon' could not be there but delighted with the Church. Biog:Mr Rolfe; Mr Froude; The Meuricoffres; Lord Hothouse.
