Josephine Butler to Mrs Tanner

Mr Thomas Pease (d 15 Jan 1884) lived at Westbury on Trym, nr Bristol. The International Congress of the Federation took place in 1883 at the Hague the week of Monday 17 Sep and he attended it as a representative of the Bristol and Western Counties Cttees and of the National Association. (An obituary of Mr Thomas Pease was given in the Shield 2 Feb 1884 p10). 'put on the next tickets that the Mayor of Derby presides at the meeting on the 28th.' The meeting on the 28 Jan 1884 was the annual meeting of the LNA which met that year at Derby. JB went to some trouble in the months before to get the speakers she wanted (see letters of 20 Nov and 14 Dec 1883 to Mrs Tanner). The evening meeting was a great success. The Mayor of Derby (William Holson) occupied the Chair and 8 aldermen and councillors on the platform with him; and Joseph Arch whom she was anxious should attend spoke together with Prof Stuart and herself and others. (See Shield 2 Feb 1884 p12). JB was prevented by family calls (see letter of 24 Jan 1884) from attending the full programme at Derby but got there for the big evening meeting on the 28th.
