[Letter starts] '... its accompanying debility prevent me doing much that it is my duty to do here and I therefore dare not volunteer to do extra work'. This reads as if Henley is still in the House of Commons at the time he wrote this letter, though feeling his age more than when he supported the 2nd reading of Fowler's Repeal Bill 21 May, 1873 (see letter of 27 May 1873 JB to R F Martineau and letter of 8 Jun 1878 JB to H J Wilson). Henley retired in 1878 so that probable date of letter would be just before his retirement, say 1877. Biog: Henley, Rt Hon Joseph Warner (1793-1884)
