Written from Liverpool to Clarks at Street, Somersetshire. Recommending a little book called 'The hour before the dawn' published for the Social Purity Alliance; she hopes that after reading it they may be able to join the Alliance.

'The hour before the dawn: an appeal to men' was published anonymously in 1876 by Trubner for the Social Purity Alliance. A French translation was published the same year in Paris. Josephine Butler's name appeared on the title page of the 2nd edition in 1882. (Both editions can be consulted at The Women's Library)
