Scope and Content

Written from Liverpool. Undated but shortly before the Sheffield Meeting on 16 Nov. Still very unwell and will only be able to speak a few words; she is heartbroken about it after all their noble efforts and preparations. She will come on the Monday morning and George will come on Tuesday.

Notes: 'how unwell I am still'.

This was from the cold and fever contracted at Chatham on 18 Oct. Despite alarming account of her symptoms in the letter she rallied for the occasion (the meeting for ladies on the afternoon of 15 Nov) and addressed 2 meetings (one an overflow). (See 'The Shield' 1 Dec 1875 pp 297-9). See also letter of 4 Nov 1875.

'Thanks for the letter about the poor child'.

In a letter from Josephine Butler to Mrs Wilson dated 'about 1 Nov 1875' she asks Mrs Wilson whether she could arrange for her to see the child when she comes to Sheffield. Stansfeld has just come from Newcastle, when he says it was a splendid meeting. See letter from Frederick Clark to HJ Wilson dated 10 Nov 1875 about the Newcastle meeting on 9 Nov.
