Regards Mr Bell as most unsatisfactory upon their question. The Conservative candidate is likely to 'promise for repeal'. The greatest danger is a compromise.

Election at Hartlepool on 29 Jul 1875. The candidates were: Isaac Lowthian Bell (Liberal); Major Duncan (Conservative). Bell was returned for the Hartlepools and sat for that constituency till the dissolution of 1880
