JB wished to present Prof James Bryce to the Scottish electors: James Bryce (1838-1922) was Regius Professor of Civil Law at Oxford (1870-1893) and in the General Election of Jan 1874 he unsuccessfully contested the borough of Wick. In 1880 he was returned to Parliament for the Tower Hamlets division
In 1885 he was returned by a large majority for South Aberdeen, a seat which he held until he retired from the House of Commons in 1906.
