National Dock Labour Corporation

Scope and Content

The National Dock Labour Corporation [NDLC] was created in 1941 by the Dock Labour Order to undertake the organisation of dock labour during the war to ensure the rational use of manpower in the national interest and the decasualisation of dock labour. The NDLC operated through Local Boards eg the Port of London Dock and Labour Board and functioned through various sub-committees on which both employers and labour were represented. J K Swire was heavily involved in these Committees and was Chairman of some. A series of 3 files of correspondence was created to cover the letters arising from his work on them.
