Photograph captioned 'Pandita Ramabai & her gifted daughter Manoramabai, the widely known phialthropist who has opened widows homes in Poona and at Bangalore containing over 600 widows oprhans and infants - all worked on faith lines. Originally a Brahmone - well versed in Sanscrit, hence "Pandita" (Professor). Her daughter was educated in America while she was educated in England and was baptized there. Has been in America also. Pandita Ramabai Sarasvati (23 April 1858 – 5 April 1922) was an Indian social reformer, a champion for the emancipation of women, and a pioneer in education. She was accorded the titles of Pandita as a Sanskrit scholar and Sarasvati as a scholar after being examined by faculty of the University of Calcutta. Pandita Ramabai was a social worker, scholar and a champion of women's rights, freedom and education. Pandita Ramabai participated in the freedom movement and was one of the 10 women delegates of the Congress session of 1889. [Source: Wikipedia]
