Collection of notebooks containing notes produced by Douglas Walmsley. Many contain notes of lectures attended at Manchester New College, London.

Administrative / Biographical History

Douglas Walmsley was born on 5 June 1848. He trained as a pupil teacher with John Relly Beard before moving to Manchester New College, London where he studied between 1866 and 1873, followed by a spell as a Hibert Scholar at Heidelberg. In 1874, he became the minister at Bank Street Chapel, Bury. Whist at Bury he was the secretary of the North and East Lancashire Unitarian Mission. He moved to First Church Belfast 1894, where he remained for twelve years. He retired from ministry at the age of 57, retiring to Windermere because of his wife's poor health, and moving to Manchester following her death. He was elected secretary of the Widows' Fund in 1918 at the age of 70, a post he was to occupy for the next 14 years. He was the author of the popular hymn 'Father O hear us'. He died on 29 June 1940 at Kendal.
