Since the 1980s, Brunel University London has built up a variety of special collections, now all housed together in the library. This started with a bequest of books, journals, maps and photographs on railways and their history in 1983, on the death of Charles Clinker. This was joined by a bequest from David Garnett, who died in 1984, and since then these collections have continued to grow. They have also been joined by a diverse range of other collections, used by both Brunel and external researchers and to support university teaching.
Subjects covered include Shakespeare, the Channel Tunnel, transport history, working class autobiographies, poetry, Middle-Eastern music, the International Labour Organisation and South Asian literature, art, theatre and music. The institutional archives of Brunel University London and its predecessor colleges are not part of Special Collections, and are held at Brunel University London Archives.
