Barclays Group Archives is one of the principal financial and business archives in the UK. Material is managed, made available, interpreted and added to, by a small team of in-house archivists. The archives are centralised at our research site near Manchester.
The parent company, Barclays PLC, has been providing banking services continuously since 1690 and is thus one of the oldest UK companies with an unbroken history. Two of the constituent banks reach back even further: one of these – Martins - traces its origins to Sir Thomas Gresham in the 16th century. The records date mainly from the early 1700s onwards, and are particularly strong in the areas of private and country banks, the growth of high street banking, and British overseas banking in the mid-1900s (especially Africa and the Caribbean). One of the few complete sets of early customer ledgers, for Goslings & Sharpe of Fleet Street (1717-1896), is becoming a much-used and valued series for researchers.
We encourage external access to the collections where possible, bearing in mind any necessary restrictions imposed by customer, commercial and third-party confidentiality.
