Aberystwyth University was established in 1872, and the archive of the university has been accumulating ever since. Other archives and manuscript items have since been donated to the university, mainly from former members of staff and students.

Information about 49 archives and manuscript collections has been made available on the Hub. The archives are particularly strong in the history of education in Wales, and in Welsh literature, music, history and academic research. The university also holds a number of scientific archives and material relating to librarianship and publishing. Items of wider interest can be found in collections such as the George Powell Archive, which includes a papal bull from 1333 and theatre account books for Covent Garden and Drury Lane, and amongst the Collected Letters which include letters written by the composer Mendelssohn.
