Administrative / Biographical History

Lorn Macinnes Macintyre was born in Taynuilt, Argyll, in  1942 , and studied English at the  University of Stirling. He is a novelist, television scriptwriter, short story writer, and poet. His books include the Chronicles of Inverness series.

The interview between Iain Crichton Smith and Lorn Macintyre was recorded at the poet's residence in Oban on Friday, 05 March,  1971 , in connection with a project for the University of Stirling. The transcript of this interview is accompanied by Lorn Macintyre's undergraduate dissertation The poetry of Iain Crichton Smith, which is also based on the interview.

Iain Crichton Smith , poet and novelist, was born on the Isle of Lewis in  1928 . He was educated in Stornoway and the  University of Aberdeen. As well as being a writer, he was a teacher in Clydebank, Dumbarton and Oban before retiring in  1977 . His first book of poems, The Long River, was published in  1955 , and he has published frequently since, including Selected Poems (1982 ). Iain Crichton Smith was bilingual in Gaelic and English. Until his death in October  1998 , he was one of the most prolific writers of Gaelic fiction and verse, and had been producing Gaelic poetry for almost four decades.
