Scope and Content

Papers relating to various aspects of administration of the extra-mural department of the University. There is material relating to the Lamb Guild House in Bowdon, Cheshire, an independent body providing adult education courses; papers on the search for a residential college for adult education, with schemes for such a college at Lyme Park, Disley, the Hermitage, near Holmes Chapel, and Gawsworth New Hall, near Macclesfield; papers (1944-1969) concerning the administration of Holly Royde House, Didsbury, which became the Department's centre for adult residential courses; and papers of the extra-mural committee, 1944-1947, and the committee on future policy and organisation of the extra-mural department, 1942-1947.
